The Swedish trio My heart is a metronome has been heard and seen a little here and there during the past few years. With their catchy alternative indie, they’ve appeared on Swedish national radio and television several times, but also made it over to the states where their singles have been rotating on both national and college radio stations. They’ve also toured the UK and been part of the soundtrack to the BAFTA award winning TV show ‘Made in Chelsea’
My heart is a metronome started out as lead singer and guitarist Mattis Malinen’s solo project. After years of playing in various bands who later turned out to lack ambition, he set off to spend a cold February weekend at a cottage in the north of Sweden, recording the debut EP ’Sketches’ by himself. After following up the EP with a ’hobo tour’, train hopping through Europe with a guitar on his back, playing anywhere from smokey bars in Budapest to beach parties in Nice, he felt that the project needed a rhythm section. Enter Gustaf Simonsson and Felix Carlsten.
The trio clicked right away and went on to win the title as ”Sweden’s best unsigned band” on national radio, playing live on Sweden’s biggest TV broadcast charity event as well as touring the UK. Following up with an EP and four singles, the band gained praise throughout Europe and the US, from blogs to radio stations, for their unique and hooky alternative rock.
In 2018, the band released a new EP ‘Tierp’, with the name being derived from singer Mattis Malinen’s hometown, which was recorded in their rehearsal space but mixed by none less than Grammy award winning producer and mixer Pelle Gunnerfeldt (The Hives, Refused, Veronica Maggio). Shortly after the release, My heart is a metronome entered the studio again with Mr. Gunnerfeldt, but now adding yet another Grammy award winning producer – Simon Nordberg (Anna Ternheim, Britney Spears, Kent, Håkan Hellström). This resulted in three new singles (‘Landslide’, ‘Mother of all mothers’, ‘Tonight’) which were released in the first half of 2019 on the record label “Fifth Island Music” (Sony Music Group).
During the fall of 2019, My heart is a metronome continued their work with the up and coming producer Dino Medanhodzic and released the single ‘Diamonds’ and EP ‘Benevolence’, which both claimed praise from Spotify and been on heavy rotation on their editorial playlists.
Now, after almost 10 years as a band, My heart is a metronome is getting ready to release their debut album, produced and mixed by Jakob Grundtman (Tallest man on earth, Francis) and mastered by Sören von Malmborg (Coldplay, Sia, Avicii). For the upcoming album, the band goes back to old roots wanting to portray the songs as they were written, capturing the stripped ‘live’ sound like a band playing together in a room. The album will be released during the spring of 2024, with a few singles being released during the winter of 2023.
